Can you defend yourself against domestic violence charges?

If you're accused of a charge of domestic violence, you probably have already considered many of the potential outcomes. You could be imprisoned or fined heavily; you could be forced out of your home or have your children kept away from you if you're convicted. It's important that you have good representation to help you through this time, because you don't want to be found guilty of something that wasn't your fault or that was started by another person.

There are some defenses you can use against charges of domestic violence. Using one of these may be able to help you have your charges lessened or dropped altogether.

For instance, if you're the wrong suspect, you could be accused of a crime you didn't commit. You'll need to defend yourself by showing that you have an alibi or that you can prove that you weren't there at the time of the incident. This can be done by providing photos, video footage or other information.

Deliberately false allegations can get some people in trouble. It's not fair, but if you've been accused of domestic violence when you were really the victim, you could still be the person who is accused of wrongdoing. The best thing you can do is to provide your side of the story to your attorney, so you can plan a defense that works well for your case. You'll work together to find inconsistencies in the other party's case.

In any case, it's important that you get to tell your side of the story. What one person says isn't necessarily the whole truth.
