Criminal defense may become custody battle

On Behalf of | Apr 9, 2014 | Criminal Defense

Criminal and family law don’t normally mix, but that doesn’t mean that cases in the various courts don’t share details or factors. In fact, the details and outcome of a criminal defense case can impact civil actions such as child custody, providing another reasons to understand one’s legal rights and plan for a strong defense. For one Newport News, Virginia, man, recent charges of child neglect could have an impact not only on his own freedom but on his future relationship with two sons.

According to police, officers arrived at Leeward Marina around 9:20 a.m. on Monday, April 7. Police officers state that they observed a 32-year-old man with his 7-year-old and 5-year-old sons. Police state that they found a gun on a table; they report that the gun was within easy reach of both boys.

Officers also state that when they arrived at the location, the 7-year-old boy only had on a jacket. Reportedly, his other clothing was covered in urine, which is why he wasn’t wearing it. This information came from a spokeswoman for the Newport News Police Department. The incident took place on River Road in the 7400 block.

Officers arrested the 32-year-old man. According to reports, the man faces two counts of child neglect. Officials say that the boys were placed back in the custody of their mother following the incident.

A criminal conviction of any type can cause serious consequences for future freedom, finances, career and social status. When crimes are directly related to family — especially children — civil action may follow. It’s important to build a strong defense as a buffer against future civil action.
