How dads can make the most of time with their children

On Behalf of | Jun 15, 2015 | Child Custody

As a dad, you want to do your very best for your child. As a dad who is divorced, that can sometimes be difficult, since you don’t necessarily see your child every day. Despite not seeing your child 100 percent of the time, you’re still a dad at all times, so focusing on a few tips can help you make the best of the relationship with your child.

Focus on how you act around your child. It’s more important to be there, to show support, and to be loving than it is to make each day you see your child perfect. Whether you’re coaching a soccer team or just listening to your son or daughter’s story, that interaction is what counts in the long run.

Another way to make the most out of your relationship when you want to do something different is to take your child to do something he doesn’t do in the other household. For example, if your ex doesn’t like sports, take your child to sporting events. If your ex hates going shopping, be the parent who is happy to go to the mall for a few hours. This is a good way to spend time with your kids, and you also won’t find yourself comparing the success of the day to the other parent’s ability to do the same thing.

It’s most important to make sure your child understands your life. Your life may seem like it revolves around your child, but you’re a distinct individual. Can you take your child to work to show him or her what you do? Can you take your child to the store to help pick out groceries or to get new furniture? While it may not seem exciting, seeing the hard work you put in behind the scenes is important for your child to understand you and to bond.
