What are the types of domestic violence?

On Behalf of | May 31, 2017 | Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is not just physical. It can include many different acts that affect someone’s physical and emotional health. As someone who is accused of domestic violence, you need to understand the different types to identify why you’re being accused.

Domestic violence is any kind of violence or abuse against a family member, whether it’s a child, spouse, relative or other party. There are several different types of domestic violence including sexual violence, physical violence, verbal threats, emotional abuse, economic abuse and stalking.

What is emotional abuse?

Emotional abuse is one of the least-spoken about types of domestic violence. Since it is not physical, it’s sometimes overlooked. Despite this, it’s one of the most damaging types of abuse. With emotional abuse, the perpetrator aims to control another person by damaging his or her ego and making him or her feel out of control. For instance, calling a spouse stupid or lazy could be emotionally abusive.

What is economic abuse?

Another kind of abuse that isn’t often recognized is economic abuse. In situations with economic abuse, a husband or wife may ban the other from working or limit their interactions with those outside a job. It’s normal for the abuser to control the finances and to limit the victim’s access to their income or the funds they share.

Not every situation is one of domestic violence, even if it has been claimed. There can be reasons to limit a spouse’s access to an income, for instance, especially if he or she is spending frivolously. Every situation is different, and your attorney can help you present your side of events clearly.
