How do I make the decision to divorce?

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2020 | Divorce

Even in the most unhappy or toxic circumstances, there can be a feeling of comfort and safety. We’re all programmed to seek out stability and predictability, so if a person is in a marriage that is loveless but functional, they may be inclined to stay, even though they know that they could be happier if they took action to file for a divorce.

There are also many risks associated with filing for divorce. While you may feel unhappy or emotionally neglected in your relationship, you may decide that a future that does not include living with your children full time, financial support and a big home may not be worth fighting for.

It is important that you take the time to reflect on the big picture and question why you may be making excuses for not filing for divorce. If you have been feeling unhappy in your marriage, it’s definitely time to take some sort of action to ensure that your situation improves. The following are some signs that you should consider divorce more seriously.

You feel lonely

In a relationship that is healthy, you should feel supported and comforted by your spouse. You should be in a situation where they are attentive to your needs and they’re concerned when you’re going through a hard time. If you feel lonely in a relationship, this is a strong sign that your needs are not being met.

Arguments escalate but are never resolved

If you find that you and your spouse get involved in arguments that are never resolved and simply escalate, you’re probably not effectively communicating, however, therapy may be able to help you resolve this.

Your spouse is controlling or manipulative

In toxic relationships, a spouse may try to control or manipulate you. You should never accept this behavior. Make sure that you always prioritize your safety and well-being.

If you have been unhappy in your marriage for some time, take steps to learn what life might look like for you post-divorce.
