If you’ve been stopped for drunk driving, you know that you’re already in trouble with the law. There are some things you should know about drunk driving that explain why it’s treated so negatively.
For instance, did you know that it’s been found that, on average, each person stopped for driving under the influence and arrested will have driven under the influence 80 times before that arrest? That’s many chances for someone to get into an accident or cause injuries.
Twenty-seven people are killed each day in the United States due to drunk driving crashes. It’s important to have a designated driver to prevent collisions caused by intoxication. It is possible, though, that you won’t know you’re going to be impaired. For instance, if you take a new medication and it affects you in a way you didn’t expect, you could be drowsy or disoriented when you crash. That can be an explanation you can give to police with your attorney’s assistance.
Between 50 and 75 percent of those arrested and convicted of drunk driving who have their licenses revoked will continue to drive illegally without their license. There may be many reasons for that, from needing to drive to get to work to needing to pick up children from school. If you need to drive and have been stopped for drunk driving, your attorney may be able to help you negotiate a way to keep driving with an ignition interlock device. There is also the possibility that you could enter a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program if you believe it would be of help in your situation.
