When you’re accused of a DUI, it’s in your best interests to defend yourself regardless of the situation. Even if you are in an accident that results in a death, you still have rights and need to protect your interests. While it’s appropriate to feel remorse, you don’t need to give in to the harshest penalties.

Take for instance this case involving a man in Virginia. The man from Poquoson has been charged in a fatal DUI collision. The news reports that the 23-year-old man was involved in a crash on Sept. 17 at around 3:30 a.m. At that time, he was heading east on Interstate 64.

He attempted to exit the interstate, but he went off the road as he exited. His vehicle then hit a tree and came to a stop. While the driver was able to escape with injuries, the passenger, a 20-year-old man, could not get out of the vehicle. The vehicle burst into flames before emergency help could arrive. He died at the scene.

The driver involved in this crash was taken to the hospital for treatment. Upon release, he turned himself in. He was charged with driving under the influence, driving while suspended, reckless driving and aggravated DUI manslaughter.

When you’re involved in a fatal accident, you may feel overwhelming guilt. Don’t let it blind you; you should only face fair penalties. In the meantime, you have to protect your reputation; a single mistake shouldn’t result in you having to give up your life to a life-long prison sentence or other harsh penalties.
