Who is at risk for a drunk-driving crash?

On Behalf of | Mar 30, 2018 | Drunk Driving

Drunk driving is a serious threat to everyone on the roads in the United States. No matter how old the driver is, who is driving or where he or she is from, the reality is that getting behind the wheel while intoxicated puts lives at risk.

It’s because of the risks posed by drunk driving that drunk drivers are penalized harshly in every state. Nationally, those with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 percent or higher are driving over the legal limit and may be charged with drunkenly driving. Even if your BAC is lower than .08, there’s still a risk that you could be charged if you’re driving dangerously and have alcohol in your bloodstream. For commercial drivers and those under 21, the legal BAC limit is lower. Commercial drivers must have a BAC of .04 percent or lower, while those under 21 usually need to have a BAC of .02 percent or lower to avoid penalties.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tate that there is a drunk-driving related death around once every 51 minutes in the United States.

Who is at risk of a drunk-driving crash?

Those who drive while under the influence of alcohol are approximately 11 times more likely to get into a drunk-driving crash. MADD claims that around a third of those who are arrested and convicted of drunk driving had done so in the past. Essentially, those at the highest risk are at a high risk because they’re repeat offenders. Men are also more likely to drive when intoxicated than women, making it more likely for a man to get hurt or killed in a drunk-driving crash.

Those who drive while drunk are a hazard to others and themselves, but not everyone who appears drunk is. Regardless of the situation, a good defense can help you protect your best interests.
